Editing That Moves Ideas to ActionI work with authors of business and professional documents to add power to the presentation of ideas and lead target audiences to action. Effective writing is created through a series of steps. Some writers follow these steps intuitively; most writers produce better results quicker by following them explicitly.
I can join the writing process at any point but usually begin by reading the current draft to see what the content communicates, to whom the style communicates and what results the author expects. Then I review my findings with the author to assure that what I learned from the document is what needs to be communicated to whom and why. I work with the author to make changes that add power consistent with the author and organization's style. When the document communicates its intended content to the target audience I edit for clarity, economy and technical correctness. My role can range from advisor-to-the-author to hands-on editing to original writing and even participation in the development of ideas. As an editor, my role is always to assist the owners of the final product communicate more effectively. As a senior management consultant who has worked in a wide range of industries, dealt with changing regulations and participated in the development of legal cases I have experience in communicating to a broad spectrum of audiences about diverse topics. Audiences have included corporate management from the board room to the shop floor, regulatory agencies and attorneys. I have designed presentations, written reports and edited my own work and that of clients, staff writers, bosses and peers. I have been the voice for major projects and changes within large organizations including merger implementations, restructuring and cost cutting. Special areas of interest are business process development and documentation, business reports and presentations for corporate internal or client use, marketing and sales support, regulatory compliance and litigation support.
